Winter ready! Tips to wash your car during the cold months

Winter can be a challenge for your car. Dirt, road salt, and freezing temperatures can damage the paint, wheels, and windows. With the right winter cleaning routine, your car will stay clean and well-protected against the elements. Check out our handy tips to get your car ready for winter.

Preparing your car for washing

  1. Start with a Pre-Cleaner

Before you begin washing your car, it’s important to use a pre-wash cleaner. This removes stubborn dirt, road salt, and oil. Spray the pre-wash cleaner, such as Cartec Twister Comfort, onto the dirty areas of your car, let it sit for a few minutes, and rinse it off with a pressure washer or hose. This prevents dirt from scratching the paint during washing.

  1. Thoroughly clean the wheels

After applying the pre-wash cleaner, it’s time to focus on the wheels. Wheels endure harsh conditions from road salt and brake dust. Use a powerful wheel cleaner, such as Cartec Wheel Cleaner, and a specialized brush to loosen stubborn dirt without damaging the wheels. Don’t forget to clean the inner parts of the wheels as well.

Washing your car

  1. Rinse the car with water

After using the pre-wash and wheel cleaner, thoroughly rinse your car with water. Use a pressure washer to remove all loosened dirt. This is an essential step to prevent scratches during the washing process.

  1. Use a good car shampoo

A winter shampoo is essential during the colder months. It cleans effectively even at low temperatures. Choose a shampoo that’s gentle on paint but tough on dirt, like Cartec Splash Shampoo, which provides a shiny, water-repellent finish.

  1. Wash at the right time of the day

Choose a time when the temperature is above freezing, such as the middle of the day. This will prevent water from freezing on your car during washing. Work quickly and avoid standing water with solid frost.

Protecting your car in winter

  1. Thoroughly dry your car

After washing, it’s crucial to dry your car completely. Use a Cartec Aqua Drying Towel to remove water droplets. This prevents water from freezing in crevices or leaving stains on the paint.

    1. Protect the paint with wax

A good layer of wax acts as a shield against dirt and road salt. Choose a wax designed for colder temperatures and carefully apply it after washing. For instance, Cartec Fast Glaze provides long-lasting protection and a deep shine.

  1. Protect door seals with Vinyl

Door seals can freeze shut during winter due to moisture and frost. Use a specialized rubber or vinyl protector, like Cartec Vinyl, to keep the seals flexible and prevent freezing. This makes opening doors much easier on frosty mornings.

  1. Regularly check for salt residue

Road salt can accumulate in hard-to-reach areas such as wheel arches, sills, and underneath the car. Regularly check for salt residue and rinse it thoroughly to prevent rust formation.
